Located very close to northwest Kotor, Perast is a relatively old settlement in Montenegro's Bay of Kotor. The town directly lies beneath the St. Elijah hill, over a cape that separates Kotor from the Bay of Risano. Perast is famous for two small islands namely, Gospa od Skrpjela and St. George Island, latter being a manmade one. Built atop a rock called skrpjel, the Gospa od Skrpjela Island's existence is attributed to a fable, which tells a tale of two sailors who found a picture of Virgin Mary on the rock.

Owned by the Republic of Venice between 1420 and 1797, Perast formed the part of the Venetian Albania. Perast's 16 Baroque palaces were constructed in that era.
